doctor?

yes?

does it help you to...
talk to the bodies?

they're still people.
the work we do is very
invasive and impersonal,
it helps me to establish
a relationship.

biography

a forensic scientist hailing from ilsabard. he was drafted into the empire at a young age, his xaela tribe having been taken by garlean soldiers as prisoners. after enduring mandatory military training, he was signed onto the medical course, coming out of it with two things: the rank of "lucan mal aegrus", and both physical and mental scars. his mentor was quite hard on him, delivering harsh punishments if lucan ever slipped up; the most notable being a deep slash across his back that cut through his scales, and a bullet to the joint in his knee, to which his lower leg had to be replaced with a prosthetic. once he defected from the empire, he decided to put his medical training to use by turning to forensics; while he could have gone into medicine, the guilt of potentially losing patients was too much for him to consider. both independant and grand company issued police forces began flocking to him for assistance solving cases, and he was more than happy to provide. though after a decade of this business, another man awoke in his body - mikh'li elakha. this was of no ill intent, though he was devoid of memory, trying his best to carry out lucan's work until he awoke in his own body once again, feeling as though nothing had happened.

not many know lucan beyond his polite demeanor. it's difficult to when he's as quiet as he is, keeping every little detail of his life to himself. in fact, many are intimidated, even afraid of him, mistaking his silence for coldness, bitterness. the reality is that this couldn't be further from the truth - lucan is a very sweet, considerate person. while he won't bend over backwards for anyone (despite what his scoliosis x-rays show), he does care a tremendous amount about the wellbeing of those he loves. wracked with anxiety, he's quite the perfectionist as a result of his strict training. do not try his patience, however; while he may have a lot of it, the claims of being "intimidating" and "frightening" come to light when it starts wearing thin.

notable ocs

dakila darksteel

- he/they -

a private investigator who works closely with lucan. despite working "alone", dakila relies on lucan heavily to solve his cases. the two happen to be lovers, though neither of them will ever admit it. they're often found in either their own or each other's office.

a fellow garlean defector. lucan and zven were close during their time in garlemald, both escaping the empire at the same time. he now owns a humble bar, working as an informant; dakila gets most of his information from him, and he was actually the one who recommended lucan as a trustworthy forensic scientist for the detective.

zven riedel

- he/him -

mikh'li elakha

- he/him -

the man who stole lucan's body. mikh'li is an aetherologist - he is aetherically gifted himself, finding great joy in his work. though he was unhappy with his place in life and wished to change it, casting a powerful spell that sent his soul into lucan's body. once this was resolved, the two became acquaintances.

an acquaintance from his work. shushuya is a potionsmith based in kugane, who first reached out to lucan requiring his assistance with her craft. the two get along well, with the occasional banter between them. shu also happens to work as staff at the perfumed parlour, an establishment lucan visits to lend a hand with.

fero decimus

- he/him -

a more recent acquaintance, and another imperial defector. while the two didn't meet within the empire, fero tends to call upon lucan for help with the process and comes to him for comfort. (and to lucan's cat too, as her soft fur is very comforting.)

notable npcs

cid and lucan were close during their time at the empire, so much so that they even defected together. when lucan was shot, cid was the one who crafted his prosthetic leg. the two try to stay in touch, visiting each other's workplace every now and again.

cid garlond

...«medical examiner»

”i'm sure you understand the gravity of my work.”

despite his extensive medical training from his time at the empire, lucan has never been able to bring himself to work on live patients, out of fear of the risk of failure. as such, he's taken to working with the dead, performing autopsies and various other forensic analysis for grand companies and private investigators.

«imperial defector»...

”some things are better left unsaid and unknown.”

when it comes to his background and his time within the empire, lucan remains rather quiet about it all. upon meeting other imperial defectors, however, it becomes an entirely different story - for while it pains him to recall it, he'll gladly converse over any common ground they might share, even going as far as offering to assist them through the process of finally leaving the empire.

...«steppe diaspora»

”the azim steppe? i can't say i've ever been...”

considering his unusual circumstances and upbringing, lucan is a xaela that has never once stepped foot within the azim steppe. as such, he tends to gravitate towards any other xaela he might meet, eager to learn of their experiences and to try to reconnect with any shred of the culture that was taken from him.

«aetherology»...

”i'd say i'm intimately familiar with the lifestream.”

there are two reasons for lucan's expertise in aetherology - his original purpose in the empire was to investigate manipulation of aether and to develop the hypertuning process. the other reason, however, being his many moons spent adrift within the lifestream while mikh'li masqueraded in his body, with his newfound aether vision serving as a permanent reminder of his rather surreal out-of-body experiences.

...«mikh'li elakha»

”who gave you permission to waltz around in my body?”

while waking up in another's body may have been the plan, mikh'li certainly had not anticipated just how difficult impersonating another person would be. lucan had a reputation to uphold; he was strict, sophisticated, intelligent, and mikh'li was... none of those things. as such, if lucan is ever a tad bit out of character, then perhaps it's not entirely him you're talking to.
